Formerly, it was known as the Directorate of Politics and Organization where it encompassed four main sections namely the Legal Section, Public Relations Section, Research Section and Administration section. In light of the expanding roles of the Directorate, , a decision was made to change the name to the Directorate of Defence Policy in 2004, in the aim for it to be more focused in its roles and to act as a centralised player/coordinator pertaining to defence policy matters for the Ministry of Defence. In the year 2002, the Public Relations section was transformed into a unit and transferred to Office of Permanent Secretary. The same apply to Legal section in 2008.
